The Studio
The studio is where everything begins — long before a painting has a title, and long after the music has stopped.
It is a working room, not a showroom: canvases leaning against the walls, stretchers stacked up to the ceiling, a floor that keeps the traces of every piece made here. This page is a look inside.
My way into painting went through the Opera and Ballet Theater in Dushanbe — the rhythm of the orchestra, the line a dancer's body draws in the air. After New York and many years in Moscow, I settled in Catalonia in 2022, and the Mediterranean light found its way into my colour.
Wherever I work, the studio becomes a place of listening before it becomes a place of painting.
Most of my large canvases are painted on the floor. I walk around them, kneel on them, sometimes lie across them — the whole body takes part, not only the hand.
This is what empathy, Einfühlung, means to me in practice: a painting is not an object I stand in front of, but a stream of movement and sensation I step into. The brush is only the last point of a gesture that starts much deeper.
Painting is only one of the languages spoken here. Clay, wood, wire, epoxy and silk share the same space, and the same blues travel from canvas to ceramic and back again.
A vase can continue a painting; a scarf can carry a brushstroke out into the street. The studio is where these materials meet and learn from each other.
Every work leaves the studio as the beginning of a conversation — with the viewer, with nature, with the music it came from.
